Jaffna Fort is one of the largest and best-preserved colonial fortresses in South Asia. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1618, then dramatically expanded by the Dutch from 1658, the star-shaped fortress covers a vast area on the Jaffna Lagoon waterfront. Inside the fortified walls you'll find the ruins of the Dutch church, the old Queen's House, and cannon placements that once defended the city against European rivals. The views from the bastions over the lagoon at sunset are among the most photographed in northern Sri Lanka.

Jaffna Fort — History & Architecture

Portuguese origins (1618)

The original fort was built by the Portuguese in 1618, forming part of their strategic network of fortifications across Sri Lanka's coastline. The Portuguese held Jaffna for four decades before being expelled by the Dutch in 1658.

Dutch expansion (1658)

The Dutch East India Company dramatically expanded the fort into its distinctive star shape — a European military design specifically built to resist cannon fire. The Dutch-built Church of Our Lady of Miracles still stands within the fortifications.

British period and today

The British inherited Jaffna Fort from the Dutch and used it as their northern administrative centre. Today the fort is a protected monument, partly restored, and open to visitors. The star-shaped bastions, original walls, and lagoon views make it one of Sri Lanka's most impressive historical sites.
