Nainativu Island is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant places in all of Sri Lanka — and one of the least visited by international tourists. The island sits in the Jaffna Lagoon, accessible only by a short ferry ride from Kurikadduwan. SSP TukTuk drives you from your hotel to the ferry point, then you take the boat across to this remarkable island home to two important religious sites: the Nagapooshani Ambal Temple (Hindu) and the Naga Vihara (Buddhist). The journey through the still, green lagoon is as beautiful as the island itself.

About Nainativu Island

Nagapooshani Ambal Temple

One of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi. The temple is beautifully decorated and surrounded by the waters of the lagoon. Pilgrims travel from across the island and from South India to worship here. Visitors of all faiths are welcome — dress modestly and remove footwear.

Naga Vihara Buddhist Shrine

Also on Nainativu is the Naga Vihara, a Buddhist shrine that draws pilgrims who believe the Buddha himself visited this island. The peaceful atmosphere and the convergence of two major world religions on one tiny island makes Nainativu a truly unique spiritual destination.

The Ferry Journey

The ferry ride to Nainativu is a destination in itself — gliding through the still lagoon waters with fishing boats and pelicans for company. The journey takes about 20–30 minutes from the Kurikadduwan pier.
